The United States Distance Learning Association and the USDLA Awards Committee invite nominations for the USDLA 2003 Distance Learning Awards. The Awards will be presented on April 30th during the Learning and Training Week 2003 Conference and Expo held by Advanstar Communications at the Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C. from April 28 – May 1, 2003. The award categories are:

I. Excellence in Distance Teaching in the following five areas:

• Pre-K-12
• Corporate / Business
• Government
• Higher Education
• Health Care / Telemedicine

The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding individual who has creatively utilized distance education technology to inspire learning. The recipient must have completed teaching a course/series/unit in a distance learning format with an imaginative approach to the material taught, well designed instructional strategies, and a demonstrated rapport with the program participants, as appropriate.

II. Excellence in Distance Learning Programming in the following five areas:

• Pre-K-12
• Corporate / Business
• Government
• Higher Education
• Health Care / Telemedicine

The purpose of this award is to recognize organizations, which have designed and delivered an outstanding and comprehensive distance learning program service. The ideal recipient would have had a regional or multi-state comprehensive curriculum, including courses from diverse disciplines.

III. Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual in the following five areas:

• Pre-K-12
• Corporate / Business
• Government
• Higher Education
• Health Care / Telemedicine

The purpose of each of these awards is to recognize an individual in each of the five areas who demonstrates extraordinary achievements through distance learning. An individual nominated should be known for scholarly research and writing, leadership activities, service, and/or contributions to a better understanding of distance learning.

USDLA Awards Procedural Information:

1. DUE DATE - All nomination packages must be received by Friday, February 7, 2003.

2. JUDGING CRITERIA - Located at www.usdla.org/awards/criteria.

3. NOMINATION COVER FORM - All nominations must have the official nomination cover form with the following information: (1) award category (e.g., Distance Teaching / Higher Education); (2) complete contact information for organization or individual nominated (e.g., name, title, organization, address, phone, fax, e-mail); (3) contact name and information for individual submitting the nomination if it is not a self-nomination; (4) a brief narrative summarizing the nomination, not to exceed 50 words. 4. REQUIRED MATERIALS

• Excellence in Distance Teaching: (1) a general description of the course(s) taught; (2) description of the distance education technology utilized; (3) up to two examples of well-designed teaching strategies, e.g. a five minute video clip or printed web screen pages; and (4) three letters of support including a student, an administrator and a colleague. If submitting printed web screen shots, selected pages should demonstrate the nominee's teaching strategies and personality as appropriate. A class syllabus or pages that provide general instructions only are not recommended. No more than 10 pages should be submitted.
 
 
 
 
   
• Excellence in Distance Learning Programming: (1) a general description of the program; (2) for video-based distance learning programs, a video with clips to illustrate “best of program”, excellence in teaching or contributions to distance learning (not to exceed 10 minutes) ---- or ---- for web-based programs, a URL and necessary passwords to access the site. If for security reasons a password cannot be provided, submit copies of the course (up to 50%) and printed screen pages which show the navigation and branching.
 
 
 
 
 
 
   
• Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual: (1) a description of individual achievements as related to the field of distance education; (2) the nominee’s vita; and (3) three letters of support.
 
 

5. FEE – A fee of $100 is required for each submission in each category including: Corporate/Business, Government, Higher Education and Healthcare/Telemedicine.

6. SUBMISSION - Submit 4 copies of the nomination package, including the cover sheet, all required materials, and the submission fee to:
