DISTANCE LEARNING LOBBY PRAISES INTERNET BILL
 
USDLA voiced its support recently for the House's passage of H. R. 1542, the Internet Freedom and Deployment Act.  Executive Director, Dr. John G. Flores said passage of the bill is "good news for the nation's distance learning industry whose future prosperity depends on universal access to broadband technology in our nation's homes, schools, universities and workplaces."  The bill, sponsored by Reps. Billy Tauzin  (R-La) and John Dingell (D-Mi), requires Bell companies' central offices to have high-speed data capabilities within five years.
