Research and Praxis

Elizabeth Perrin, Journal Editor

Distance Learning, as with most human knowledge endeavors, is composed of two components, praxis (assessment, design, implementation, and evaluation), and research (testing hypothesis by collection of specific data organized into knowledge).

Without research, we are all awash on the sea of opinion. Without praxis (design and implementation) we fall into shallow waters where we can neither swim well nor even float successfully. As a result, we cannot self-perpetuate and maintain a status quo because of those pesky unexpected currents of change.

The research article on Group Interaction by Lobel, Neubauer, and Swedburg provides significant data that may impact distance-learning practice. Two praxis studies – Fielding Graduate Institute and Duquesne University, provide contrasting models of distance learning. Fielding is well established and widely recognized for excellent distance learning programs. Duquesne is making its first steps in the international arena through a relationship with the University of Ulster. Both are worthy of in-depth study by supporters and practitioners of distance learning.

Brent Muirhead, one of our regular contributors, adds the student point-of-view in Selecting a Distance Learning School.
