STUDENT EXCHANGE

This insightful comment comes not from a student but from an experienced online teacher. It first appeared in DEOS-L, Monday, June 24, 2002 and is reprinted here with permission from Mr. Tischler and from DEOS-L.

Online Teaching

. . . DL is an alternative to f2f, not a replacement. I've probably taught 40 - 45 on line classes for different universities that also offer site based classes and the overwhelming majority of my students tell me if not for DL, they would not be taking any classes, as f2f is just not a viable alternative for them, for a variety of lifestyle reasons.

In basic marketing courses, students are taught that if you want to increase sales you have 2 alternatives:

  1. Increase your existing % of market share (take sales away from your competitors), or
  2. Retain your current % of market share but find ways to grow the entire market. DL is following the latter course, increasing the overall market for education.
