Assistant Director, Center for Distance Learning,
University of Texas-Pan American, Edinburg, TX 78539

Scope of Job: Supervises the daily operation of the Center for Distance Learning under the direction of the Director, and performs the duties of the Director in his/her absence. Under the guidance of the Director, oversees the Center budget and makes recommendations for budget changes, develops and writes various reports, and develops and maintains internal

Center policies and procedures. The Assistant Director directly supervises those persons reporting directly to him/her as shown in the current organizational chart, and monitors the supervision of all other students and regular employees in the Center. The Assistant Director expressly oversees the instructional design function of the Center, and monitors the technical aspects of the Center's mission. Working in concert with the Director, helps develop and execute the Center's Strategic Plan.

  • Coordinates closely with the various academic departments and individual faculty members.
  • Upon the assignment of the Director, works closely with representatives of other institutions.
  • Work may include both routine and non-standardized assignments, and some travel
  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director.

Required: Master's degree in instructional technology, adult learning, instructional design, educational technology, or comparable degree. Three years experience in the development, design, and/or teaching of web-based courses in a higher education environment. Two years experience in an administrative position in higher education. As the Director may be absent for an extended period of time, must be able to think and act using sound independent judgment. Must be able to work effectively under pressure and irregular hours. Must be able to thrive in a rapidly changing, often unpredictable, work environment. The successful candidate will innately enjoy exploring new uses of computer technology.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience with a course management systems such as WebCT, Blackboard, or Prometheus, and moderate experience with web authoring software.

Salary: $55,000 per year, plus a generous benefit package.
