Bridging the Digital Divide: Vantage Learning to Provide Online Reading and Writing Development Tool to Underachieving Schools

Vantage Learning Foundation to fund delivery of state-of-the-art online skill development tool, MyAccess, free to at risk schools

Palm Desert, CA June 24, 2002:  Vantage Learning, the world's leader in online  assessment and automated essay scoring, announced today the formation of The Vantage Learning Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing at risk-schools the same online reading and writing tools now used in more than 49 U.S. states.   The Foundation, introduced from the floor of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Large Scale Assessment Conference in Palm Desert, CA, will provide online writing and reading instruction resources to K-12 schools throughout the United States.

As part of the initiative, Vantage Learning will offer its MyAccess(tm) writing and reading skills development tools to schools which could otherwise not afford such technology.  MyAccess allows students to practice their reading and writing skills online, submit writing and essay samples and receive immediate feedback on how they can improve their proficiency.

"As a worldwide leader in online assessment, we have been fortunate to achieve significant success and have a platform in place that can now be used to help those students who are most at risk and whom can most benefit from the power and immediacy of the Internet," says Peter Murphy, Vantage's CEO.   "Our market position compels us to share that success with an ever expanding circle of students and schools at a time when education increasingly determines one's success in life."

According to Scott Elliot, Vantage's COO, "The Bush administration's 'No Child Left Behind' program poses a particular challenge to schools as they face limited budgets for computer technology.  The Vantage Learning Foundation will help ensure that every child has the ability to advance their writing skills with state-of-the-art computer technology and prepare for their educational future."

MyAccess is an Internet-based instructional product designed to assess and assist students in the development of their writing skills.  Built upon the Vantage Learning Platform, MyAccess incorporates Vantage's IntelliMetric automated essay scoring engine, which administers and scores responses to open-ended questions over the Internet using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology.   With MyAccess, students can write, review and revise their work and receive diagnostic feedback on several important writing dimensions, ranging from organization to mechanics.   Teachers can review student work online and provide additional feedback, including details on essay focus, organization, fact patterns, sentence structure, and mechanics.   In addition, a range of reporting options allow students and schools to closely track student progress, individualized by the student, school or school district.

MyAccess can be integrated with any existing classroom management or testing software and can assess any and all content areas-from history to science, and from mathematics to geography.  MyAccess is currently being used in school districts throughout Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Florida, California, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Indiana, and Idaho.

To find out if your school is eligible to benefit from the Vantage Learning Foundation, please contact Scott Elliot at (215) 579-8390.
