USDLA/Quality Standards certifies that an educational provider adheres to recognized standards of quality and performance, is responsive to its constituencies, and is committed to excellence in all aspects of its distance learning program.
USDLA/QS is the only such program focused on systematically improving the processes of distance learning providers. We believe our standards clarify relationships, thus making for a more transparent process – benefiting students and providers alike.
From the student’s standpoint, QS addresses both academic and institutional aspects of distance learning. It promotes sound instruction and ethical conduct. The process encourages mutual respect and shared expectations.
From the provider’s aspect, QS can improve a school’s marketing stance. Certification bestows an element of credibility; students become more confident in their choices. The schools, in turn, enjoy better visibility and enhanced recruiting. And, going beyond recruiting, the continuous improvement process helps reduce student attrition and thus stabilizes enrollments.
USDLA/Quality Standards has three main component: Standards of Practice, the Code of Conduct, and the continuous improvement process.
Currently, applications are being accepted for certification in the following areas of distance learning.
- K-12. Elementary/secondary schools, Kindergarten through Grade 12.
- Higher education. College and postgraduate levels offering courses which lead to a standard degree. (Individual courses or continuing education programs are reviewed within Alternative and Continuing Education.)
- Technical and Vocational Education/Training. Programs, usually post-secondary, that are primarily focused on qualifying an individual for a job, trade, or career. May offer college credit but, more often, a certificate.
- Alternative and Continuing Education. Aspirational, nonstandard, lifelong learning, or adult education offerings. (Programs serving adult learners seeking a diploma would be K12. Schools offering standard college degrees to working adults would in Higher Education.)
The possibility of extending USDLA/QS certification to corporate and government training providers is being studied.
